Marine Thermography Services

Marine IR thermography is especially useful to detect moisture ingression and damage of the hull of a vessel. IR images can help to find the right spots to fix and save on unnecessary maintenance. The main use of Infra Red Imaging for leisure vessels is hull assessments, preventative maintenence checks and purchase checks.

Infrared Imaging can show areas of moisture ingression and structural damage. The yacht in the image is in a good condition, the fibre glass hull is only showing small spots to check for water ingression and damage. A complete overhaul would be wasteful.

Most of the colds spots on this hull were caused by droplets of water. Of more interest was the keel, which should have been colder. The irregular and patchy spots are showing areas of likely damage. A closer inspection (image below) identified significant areas of water ingression on the keel.

To obtain good images, there needs to be a temperature differential. The best time to check a hull is when the boat is taken out of the water after the season. The imaging is quick and non-invasive. Areas of damage can be marked immediately on the hull or identified later in the detailed report.

The price of a thermography depends highly on the size and condition of the boat. But a thorough assessment of the hull is in most cases less than $500. This includes travel, on-site imaging, off-site analysis and a detailed report.
